The most novel addition to Sail Into Night’s sound is Mahmood’s harmonium, which provides a satisfyingly rich drone to these songs, whether unobtrusively coloring the background or (as on the stately “Chambers”) serving the same role swelling synthesizer pads do for others. These songs largely rely on just that drone, Qizilbash’s pleasingly elemental guitar work, the omnipresent drum machine and the duo’s subtly shaded, slightly gothy voices. Like a lot of bands who stick to the patient tempos Sail Into Night do, and who manage a similarly spare yet lush sound, the music on Passenger feels more elegiac than disheartened, more existential than nihilistic.
